Please Pardon the Temporary Silence

Hi!

It is 7 a.m. on a Saturday morning in early November, and I thought I'd take a moment to let my faithful blog readers know that I have NOT forgotten to post. It's just that I haven't been home much, and spend most of my extracurricular time in a gorgeous, brand-new theater in rehearsal for "Midsummer Night's Dream." Our production goes up on December 1 & 2, and we're excited! The kids are fantastic--and they're enjoying themselves, which is what it's all about. If you're local and would like to spend an evening of enjoyable Shakespearean stagecraft, please join us!

Coming up on class #6. . .

Well, my playwright troopers,

Class Six will be dedicated to stage space: oh, the fun you can have with technology and lots of room to play in! Stay tuned for the handout, but read on if you can't make it to class tomorrow:

1.) Read your copy of Nick's play for the following week (March 10). He'll be visiting our class in order to field your questions about playwriting, formatting, etc. How lucky we are to have an award-winning playwright right in our W&B backyard!

2.) Start to formulate what piece (10-15 minutes in length of your work) you'll want read aloud, by actors, at our final class. Please let me know how many actors you'll need, what ages, and what sexes, no later than March 15.

3.) Feel free to give me a shout if you'd like to talk! animox72@yahoo.com.

See you tomorrow night!

Want a Powerful Writing Tool? Use the (beat)!

Our fifth class was devoted to the "beat"-- a moment of silence on stage wherein we get to watch the character's inner monologue rather than hear her words. It is a powerful moment, and one which you can use to emphasize an important line, whether in dialogue or monologue. It is also a moment wherein your audience gets to absorb what's being said.

If you missed class, please see me for the handout--we looked at a monologue from "When We Were Women" by Sharman McDonald--in which the playwright uses beats to slow the pace of the monologue as well as highlight the myriad of emotions throughout the piece.

CHALLENGE #5: Revise your own monologue or some dialogue that you've written previously: infuse it with beats where you believe they're appropriate. We'll read both drafts aloud next week.

Also, please keep in mind that we're beginning to work up to revising/completing the scenes you'd like read at the end of our class, for staged reading night (class #10). Email or mail me anything you'd like me to look at!

Wednesday, February 16, 2005

Week #5: halfway through!

Tonight (4/17) we'll be discussing beats, pauses, and devices that force a character to simply stop talking, react, and continue talking. It is a powerful moment that deserves our, well, talking about it!

We'll be happy to have Barb back tonight after her terrible car accident. I may have to bring in some treats to make sure she's feeling better.

Meanwhile, I hope you're working on revisions of challenges/scripts past; please remember to bring your monologue to class so that we can all hear them aloud--and make sure to have copies for all of us!

See you at 7!

Welcome to the Workshop

Welcome! Glad to have you here. This is a fun workshop that intends to give you some ideas, energy, and confidence to write and complete a piece for the stage. We will read from some popular scripts, some local work, talk a whole lot about the craft of playwriting, write, read our own and each others’ pieces aloud, discuss them, and give each other constructive feedback. This is a safe place to be as creative, expressive, politically controversial, and experimental as you wish. Relax, enjoy yourself, and enjoy the process!

Visit Writers&Books virtually here to check out their schedule and other classes.

Our ten-week course will look something like this, though it’s subject to tweaking. Please scroll down or click on the links to the right to experiment with each week's challenges!

1: introductions and the basic tools of playwriting (challenge #1)
2: scene elements: stage, dialogue, and action; workshop your scripts, discussion/feedback. (challenge #2)
3: #2 workshop; elements of conflict (challenge #3)
4: the monologue (challenge #4)
5: creating significant moments: using pauses/beats; readings/disc.
6: rounding out the characters; Time to begin revisions!
7: using stage space (play-ground); revisions aloud and choosing actors
8: symbolism and profundity: making your play mean; rehearsal time
9: Reading, a game or two, rehearsal time for you to work with your actors. For next week, please write a note for your audience about how or why you created the piece.
10: A grand night of staged readings at Writers and Books! Please bring your loved ones and a yummy dish to pass.

Among some of the plays (or parts of plays) we’ll look at:

“Fences,” by August Wilson
“True West,” by Sam Shepard
“Angels in America: Perestroika,” by Tony Kushner
“Mother Hicks,” by Susan Zeder
“Fat Pig,” by Neil LaBute
“When I was a Girl I Used to Scream and Shout,” by Sharman MacDonald
“Art,” by Yasmina Reza
pieces by Ntozake Shange

Playwrights' Opportunities for January/February

Reader beware: The next three blogs are lists of upcoming competitions and queries for submissions. They are LONG. Get cozy and read carefully--then submit gleefully and often! -MH

MIDLAND COMMUNITY THEATRE presents

THE McLAREN COMEDY PLAY WRITING COMPETITION
The McLaren Memorial Comedy Play Writing Competition was established in 1989 to honor long-time MCT volunteer Mike McLaren who loved a good comedy, whether he was on stage or in the front row. The competition is to develop new COMEDY scripts suitable for production by community theatres and other non-profit theatres. More than 1200 plays have been entered. Authors come from a dozen countries and nearly every state. Winners include established playwrights and first-time authors. Entries have included one-act and full-length plays and even musicals. Every entry is read at least three times. All entrants are notified by letter in early June of their status; readers' grading sheets are attached to the letter. Finalists are notified in September of the Full-Length Play Winner, who receives a $300 prize, and the One-Act Winner, who receives $100. Round-trip transportation and lodging is provided if a play is selected for a fully-staged production at Midland Community Theatre in a later season.

Many contributors to the McLaren Competition are new to writing plays. We offer these suggestions to help you develop a winning play.
* Be sure it is funny! Every year many entries are not comedies. There are other competitions for dramas.
* Know how long a performance lasts and submit your play to the appropriate competition:
* I. One-Act Play (performance time of 30-45 minutes)
* II. Full-Length Play (70-90 minutes; for a finalist only, a readers's theatre cutting of 60 minutes may be required)

Consider language and subject matter. Midland is a small Southern city and our readers and audiences are drawn from this conservative community.
* Submit plays that have never been published or produced in a for-profit setting. One previous production in a non-profit theatre is acceptable. "Readings" do not count as productions.
* Copyright your material. Check your writer's guides for more information.
* Include a cover letter, newspaper clippings of prior readings, and information about yourself if you want, but do not bind that information into your script We enjoy reading your letters!

How to prepare a script
Scripts must be typed and bound. By bound, we mean stapled on the side or in a binder. Do not put loose pages in a clip or pocket folder! Scripts may be printed on one or both sides as long as they are easy to read. Each script must have a separate title page that includes the title of the play, the name, address and phone number of the author, and the entry division (One-Act Play or Full-Length Play). It also must have a character list at the beginning.
Each script must be accompanied by a $10 entry fee, payable by check or money order. Scripts without the fee will not be accepted until payment is made.
All scripts must be postmarked between December 1 and January 31.
No scripts will be returned unless they are accompanied by a self-addressed stamped envelope (9x12 or larger!).

PRINTABLE ENTRY FORM
(MUST BE INCLUDED WITH SCRIPT)

Deadline: 1-31-2005

The Renaissance Guild will be taking script submissions for its next new play festival, the ActOne Series Vol. IV, to be presented May 13-14, 2005 at Jump-Start Theatre. Once the pieces are selected, playwrights will have the opportunity to work with a dramaturg to hone their script before it goes into production, and to observe some of the rehearsals. The process culminates in two evenings of performances, when the writers get the opportunity to see their works come to life, local actors show their stuff on stage and the San Antonio community gets the opportunity to celebrate the work of their neighbors, friends and promising new theatre voices.

Guidelines:
We are looking for unpublished works that have not been previously performed in the Southwest Region, 5 to 30 minutes in length (can be an excerpt from a longer piece), with a maximum of 6 characters, and little or no technical requirements. For our mission and more information, visit our website at www.therenaissanceguild.org.

BOSTON THEATRE WORKS presents BTW UNBOUND 2005

Boston Theatre Works is now accepting submissions for BTW Unbound 2005. A professional not-for-profit theatre company currently in our 7th season, BTW is committed to developing and staging new plays and introducing emerging playwrights to Boston. Our the past six years we have commissioned new plays, produced world and area premiers and worked on projects with many renowned playwrights including Emily Mann, Jamie Pachino, Tracy Letts, Kyle Jarrow, Olga Humphrey and John Kuntz.

Since our first season, our annual new play festival, BTW Unbound, has been an incubator for script development. Each of the 3-5 scripts that we select are produced as a workshop with professional actors and directors before a thoughtful, informed audience with the specific purpose of helping the playwright revise and refine his or her work.

We are able to offer one grand prize cash award of $500 and two second-place prizes of $250 each. This year our mainstage season is our most exciting yet, with four outstanding plays that explore American mythology and ideology from the inside out.

We are specifically seeking plays for the festival that can deepen this exploration. Our ideal script is unfinished, but experiments with form and function, tells its story in an innovative way and pushes the boundaries of traditional narrative. It must align with our core mission: unbound by convention; driven towards discovery; engaging new audiences.

Plays considered for BTW Unbound can be of any length, style or genre but must make a substantial contribution to our ongoing dialogue on Exploring the American Experience.

Complete guidelines and requirements are available on our website at www.bostontheatreworks.com/season7/season7_BTWU05.htm. Questions or concerns can be addressed to Literary Manager Bridget Frey at litmanager@bostontheatreworks.com. Deadline (postmark): February 1, 2005

COLLABORACTION presents the 2005 SKETCHBOOK FESTIVAL

Sketchbook is a celebration of the artist's sketching mind, a bazaar where artists and audiences share their discoveries. The Festival is also a sketch itselfˇ of the way artists and patrons come together to form an artistic community.

Sketchbook is part math and part art. Over the course of 13 nights in Chicago, IL, more than 180 artists‹actors, directors, writers, designers, musicians and visual artists‹work together to create an experience that transports the participants and audience into a mood, a state of mind.

Each evening, Sketchbook presents a selection of about half of the 15-20 world premier plays of 6 minutes or less. Before, between and after the plays, DJs create a sonic environment that influences and expands the overall artistry of the Festival. Throughout the space, contemporary visual art is installed and exhibited in dialogue with the mood and spirit of the constituent plays, music and art direction.

Submission deadline is February 6, 2005. This festival has detailed and lengthy submission guidlines available here: www.collaboraction.org/Skbk05_Submit.htm

ONGOING

new!
THE BUNBURY THEATRE COMPANY
Deadline: none declared

The Bunbury Theatre Company, a small, professional black box theatre with two stages located in Jamestown, NY is now actively seeking new plays for our 2006 Season and possibly plays that will enable us to create and sustain an entire new play series (Currently we do two new works per year, as part of our Bite of The Big Apple Series) in some form, either production or reading or in an educational setting.

The Bunbury Theatre is looking for plays of all genres and lengths. Ideal scripts will have under eight characters (mainly from the 20-40 age group), have simple sets, and easily attainable prop and costume requirements. Of course if you have a great script that doesn't meet this criteria, exceptions will be made for fantastic writing. We like controversial plays, plays that attach to relevant literature and on the opposite end of the spectrum, plays that tell a very good social story using sophomoric comedy. This doesn't mean that other plays will not be considered. Again we are looking for fantastic writing.

Interested playwrights should send 10-15 sample pages of their scripts along with a cover letter, synopsis and character breakdown. Send submissions to The Bunbury Theatre Company, Attn: Matthew Kraft, 210 Cherry Street, Jamestown, NY 14701 Please allow 3-4 weeks for a response. No calls Please, we will contact you.

GREAT AMERICAN HISTORY THEATRE SEEKS PLAYS SET IN MIDWEST

Hi there, I'm Sarah Gioia, the New Works Associate at the Great American History Theatre in St. Paul, Minnesota. Now that we have a literary department (albeit of one) we also have a submission policy, which is as follows:

We do not accept unsolicited scripts. We do accept a synopsis and 10-page sample for review either through an agent or with a letter of recommendation from an artistic director. If the submission is a musical, a CD or tape can accompany the script. If there is not an SASE for materials, it will be assumed that they may be recycled when we are finished with them.

Our strong emphasis is on real stories about real people, usually though not always in the Midwestern United States. That said, I will just emphasize it is very, very rare that we do plays set outside the Midwest.

Please mail submissions to: Sarah Gioia, Great American History Theatre, 30 E. 10th St., St. Paul, MN 55101

Thank you and we look forward to hearing from you!
Sarah

NEW YORK COMPANY SEEKS ISSUE PLAYS WITH COMEDIC EDGE

The Themantics Group, a New York-based theater, chooses a theme or an issue to examine from four different perspectives. The four plays in each season will fall into a line-up following our "wedding plan":

Something Old --a classic play by an American playwright
Something New --a New York premiere production by a new voice writing for theater today
Something Borrowed --a play by a foreign playwright
Something "Blew" --a play that had a short-lived initial run and is now ready for reworking.

By enticing patrons to see all four shows each season, the Group hopes to broaden its audience©ˆs understanding of that year©ˆs theme and create discussion in the community. The company©ˆs ultimate goal is to add community and educational programming each year that deals with that season©ˆs theme.

We always welcome submissions for new plays. Please send a treatment and synopsis to: plays@themantics.org PLEASE DO NOT SEND A FULL SCRIPT!

Mr. James Ashford, Casting & Literary Coordinator
The Richard and Betty Burdick National Playwrights Festival (NPF), named after two longtime supporters of FST©ˆs New Play Development program, is held each year in May. The NPF features workshop readings of 3 new full-length plays or musicals by contemporary American writers.

As guests of the FST, playwrights are provided with roundtrip fare, housing and a small stipend, and have the opportunity to attend rehearsals, do rewrites, and participate in an audience "talkback" following the performance.

For unsolicited manuscripts, send a query letter with synopsis and dialogue sample to the Literary Department: Florida Studio Theatre, Attn: Literary. Based on these materials, FST may request the complete script. Rolling Deadline

THE WADE FESTIVAL

presented by Pig©ˆs Eye Theatre
The Wade Festival is designed to give staged readings of new works and works-in-progress and promotes the development of new plays by emerging playwrights. The Festival serves to increase the visibility of those writers, and to encourage production of their work in the Twin Cities. We©ˆre looking for plays that have not yet received a professional production, and that the playwright feels is in need of development. We accept proposals for the Wade Festival on a year-round basis.

Plays selected will be developed in rehearsal for two to five days, and then performed in front of a paying audience either once or twice.

SEEKING PLAYS SUITABLE FOR COMMUNITY THEATERS

Brooklyn Publishers is actively looking for material for its new catalog. We always need material suitable for high school students: duets, one-acts, monologues, full-length plays with large casts (the more roles for women the better), no musicals. Starting this fall, we will also carry material geared for adults. We©ˆre especially looking for scripts that we can market to community theatres in middle America‹ they are going to be somewhat conservative about language and sexual content. Comedies and mysteries are always good (we©ˆre not taking musicals or children©ˆs plays). We©ˆll be happy to look at one-acts, ten-minute plays, and full-length plays. If you have plays that have won awards or gotten good notices, those things are a big plus when it comes to marketing a script.

Send scripts via e-mail (preferred) to David Burton, brookpublishing@aol.com
(attaching Word, .rtf, or .pdf files would be fine)
or by snail mail to:
David Burton
Editor

Be sure to include production and award history.

THE FRINGE SCRIPT LIBRARY

Every year, prospective Fringe producers look for new, original, fringey scripts for the next festival, but most have no idea where to look. Year after year, fantastic scripts sit in the desk drawers of playwrights who don©ˆt know where to find producers who will be interested in their work. The Fringe Script Library is an attempt to bring Fringe producers and fringey scripts together. Scripts may be submitted to the library by mailing or dropping off one bound copy, along with the attached submission form, to the following address:

Minnesota Fringe Festival
528 Hennepin Ave #503
Minneapolis, MN 55403

Scripts will be stored in a reading area at the Fringe Festival office. Prospective Fringe producers will be invited to visit the Fringe office to browse and read scripts as much as they like. In order to maintain the library inventory, and to protect the copyrights of playwrights, scripts may not be checked out of the library. Scripts will remain in the Fringe office at all times and may only be read under the supervision of Fringe staff. All submitted scripts will be accepted for display.
