Week 2: Challenge

C H A L L E N G E # 2:

Last week, you wrote a dialogue involving conflict. Now, we’re going to flesh it out into a full scene.

Did one or both of your characters get what s/he wanted? Good. Fine. Whether either of them did or not, I’d like you to now introduce the big
WHAT IF?
(The big WHAT IF is what all good plays hinge on: I’ll elaborate on this in class.)
Introduce an unexpected result of your character(s) either getting or not getting the object or intangible thing they wanted: is there an emotional consequence for one or both of them? WHAT IF the consequence at the end of your dialogue forces an unforeseeable turn of events? Build to conflict; no need to resolve it just yet.

GO OUT ON THE EDGE! LIVE! Let your characters go through hell, whether it’s humorous or tragic! Let your WHAT IF be unpredictable, zany even!

P73 is proud to announce the P73 Playwriting Fellowship and call for submissions for the 2005-2006 Fellowship. For more information and guidelines on how to submit:
http://www.p73.org/fellowship/fellowship.html or email us atinfo@p73.org

What is P73? Founded in 1997 by Nicole Fix, Liz Jones, Asher Richelli, and Daniel Shiffman, P73 is committed to developing and producing the work of emerging playwrights. Since its inception, P73 has produced more than twenty theatrical events including Gum and Girl Under Grain by Karen Hartman, The Urn by Peter Ackerman, and The Voyage Of The Carcass by Dan O'Brien. P73 distinguishes itself by its organic, process-oriented approach to the work. The Producing Directors begin by choosing the playwright, rather than the play. Together with the writer, we create a plan for each project that best serves the writer's particular needs at that point in his or her career.

What is the P73 Playwriting Fellowship? P73's Playwriting
Fellowship was developed to provide a year
of comprehensive support to an emerging playwright
annually. The program provides a $2000 stipend,
production support for the development of one or more
projects, as well as other non-financial resources to
help the writer better establish his or her
playwriting career. The Fellow will be associated with
P73 for the course of a year, from October 1 to
September 31. Once the Fellow is selected, he or she
will work with the P73 Producing Directors to develop
a plan for the year, including a timeline for the
production work to be done on a specific project or
projects. The Fellow is expected to be present in New
York from time to time to be able to fully engage with
the opportunities available through the Fellowship.
The P73 Fellowship is best suited to individuals who
have concrete goals that can reasonably achieved at
least in part through the resources P73 can make
available to them through the program. These may
include, but are not limited to specific artistic
goals relating to the development of a certain project
or projects and support with building relationships
within the theatre community (including introductions
to theatres and agents as well as other artists).

The postmark deadline for submissions for the 2004-5
Fellowship is March 4, 2005.
